Description

Mahogany VINTAGE Frog-Back Fly Reel.
Through all my research this maybe a Joseph Turner Reel. Early 1800's!
Big Fish Reel!
It appears to be Brass and Mahogany Wood.
"Nottingham reels tended to be very simple, most of them having no form of check whatsoever, but this was part and parcel of the “Nottingham style” of fishing and generations of anglers used them to catch vast quantities of fish."
It has a wide arbour reel, typically with a four inch diameter, made almost entirely out of wood apart from a skeletal metal reinforcement braced across the back, which was found to be necessary to prevent the reels warping and to allow attachment of the foot and the central axle.
Beautiful reel in which I displayed in case, though could be used.
Brass & Mahogany.
Brass is a bit discolored in 4 hole areas,  but I have not changed nor shined the reel in the 20 yrs I have had it.
I love the history of the past anglers life and the quality that still lives on today. We have newer, lighter and mechanicaly different reels & rods but They all Do what they were meant to do on our magnificent waterways.
"
Nottingham
-style
reels
are typically light, free-running, wooden
reels
designed for river
fishing
. They resemble fly
reels
, and some were used for fly
fishing
, but the majority were used for bait
fishing
. The free-running nature of these
reels
enabled baited float tackle to drift in the current without any drag."
