    Description

Nice looking bar decor! Salt glaze bottle shape dates to circa 1850 and has pewter metal overlay showing a knight on horseback opposite a coat of arms. There are several maker's marks on the bottom of the bottle.
The previous owner described it as a Dutch gin or genever bottle that he purchased from The Netherlands (Amsterdam, North Holland). It could also be a seltzer bottle–which makes sense if the bottle was to be refilled and used repeatedly, given the ornamental pewter work.
Viewings by both experts on Dutch pewter and Christie's auction house have not returned any spectacular results. The Dutch pewter expert suggested that the overlay is a modern fantasy piece added to an antique bottle. The maker marks were not identifiable as known Dutch artists. It's a wonderful piece no matter what the history is.
Wine bottle or 750ml size with exact dimensions at 29cm tall by 8.5 cm diameter or 11.5 inches tall by 3.5 inches diameter.
Weight is 2 pounds 14 ounces.
The main mark shows G W on either side of a plant or tree with spade shaped leaves in a shield stamp.
The lion is reared up on his hind legs and has the initials I C also in a shield stamp.
There is an acorn in a shield stamp.
There is a goose inside a shield stamp with initials T S.
The fifth mark is a person with four initials H C I S.
