Description
It's not every day that you see an orange Morton Salt box with an elephant on it.This is a vintage sealed box of
Morton
Worcester Ivory Salt from the 1940's. Morton continued to produce salt under the Ivory name after buying the
Worcester Salt
company in located in Silver Springs, NY in 1943.
This salt box is from that time, shortly after Morton took control of Worcester Salt. The name and logo shown on this salt box was discontinued by Morton many decades ago.
This
75+ year old
box
is scarce, and difficult to find. I
n this very clean and
unopened
condition,
nearly impossible to locate another one for sale today
.
This box and label are in excellent
condition
, and the salt inside is still loose, not caked up after all these years.
The original waxed paper seal over the metal spout is intact, and in very good condition.
The
label has an address of New York. Although Morton is headquartered in Chicago, Worcester produced Ivory salt in Silver Springs, NY.
While I was researching
Worcester Salt
, I found a photo
in the New York State archives. It is photo #10 above, and shows
workers in the
Worcester Salt plant
in the year 1912.
Photo #11 above is a recent image of the sign in front of the Morton Salt factory in Silver Springs, NY, taken in 2018.
Morton Salt still operates from the site of the former Worcester Ivory Salt plant, in addition to their other locations.
Both photos mentioned here were found on the web, and are only shown for information, they are not part of this auction. This auction only includes the orange Ivory salt box, no photos.
The anti-caking agent listed on this box is Magnesium Carbonate. That was the original chemical Morton used beginning in 1911. Since then, other chemicals have been used by Morton as anti caking agents including Magnesium Oxide, and Sodium Silico-Aluminate, at different times over the years. Those ingredients have also been discontinued. Today, Morton uses
Calcium Silicate in their table salt to prevent caking.
Note
that the company name on this box is only Morton Salt, no mention of being a division of Morton International, or Morton-Norwich, as later versions of their salt boxes had on the label. Morton Salt was sold to a German company in 2009, and has just been sold by them in 2020 to
Stone Canyon, an industrial holding company.
