Description
This is a full unopened Ehlers oregano jar from the 1950's. It is a large glass jar with a metal lid. Albert Ehlers, Inc., was a New York City company. They were coffee roasters and packers of tea, rice, and spices. There is no zip code on this jar, as zip codes did not begin until 1963. The original price of 33 cents is stamped on the bottom of the jar. This very clean and full 60+ year old jar is nearly impossible to find for sale today.
In the first photo, I showed a modern McCormick spice jar next to the vintage Ehlers jar for size comparison only. Since spices are light weight, it is sometimes difficult to visualize the container size based on the weight of the contents. The McCormick jar is from my kitchen, and is not part of this auction.
In the 1970's, Brooke Bond Tea
Company
purchased the Ehlers company. They continued to produce spices under the Ehlers name, however the later spice containers were also marked
with the Brooke Bond name.
Most vintage Ehlers products that you find for sale today were made by
Brooke Bond.
I have other vintage spice jars on auction this week, including a different Ehlers jar from the same era. Spices are light weight, but vintage glass jars are not, and the shipping cost includes the weight after adding a box and packing material. I combine shipping if you purchase more than one item, and I pass the postage savings on to you.
